 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija 'pere April 16, 1971 – March 31 1995), was an American Tejano singer. Her contribution to fashion and music led to her being the "Queen" of Tejano music. She is one of the most well-known performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her third on their list of "Greatest Latino Artists" basing their selection on Latin albums and Latin charts of songs. Her clothing choices earned her the name "Tejano Madonna". Her fashion choices are what gave her the name "Tejano Madonna" from media outlets. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was regularly criticised for her singing Tejano music that was a genre of music that was predominantly male. She was also refused performances at Texas venues. However, her fame grew following her win of the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987, which she won nine times in succession. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name in the same year. At the time, her brother was her primary music producer as well as songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992), which peaked at number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight months in a row. The critics of the music called it"the "breakthrough recording" of her career because of its commercial success. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a smash and was her most-loved track. Live! (1993) was nominated for Best Mexican/American Album at the 1994 Grammy Awards. It was the first Tejano recording to win this award. In 1994, she released Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most successful Latin albums sold in the United States. The album was widely praised for being the reason behind Tejano music's first period of commercialization and it became one of the most loved Latin music subgenres at the time.
